Using attractive, colourful illustrations, children are introduced to units of fractions, including doubles (multiply by 2), halves (divide by 2) and quarters (divide by 4). The language of fractions in mathematical and literal terms is essential in giving the children an understanding of this topic.
The use of a variety of formats and grids in demonstrating the use of fractions is also an important factor in developing the children’s learning. A list of ‘Fraction Words’ is given, invaluable in helping to familiarise the children with the content and vocabulary of the study mat.
On the reverse side, the children are able to put into practice their learning by completing a variety of fun fraction activities using the whole, halves, quarters and three quarters.
